Foundation Row

Tunisian Crochet Foundation Row how to step 1

1.
First we need to make the foundation row, which is one forward pass and one return pass.
Make a slip knot and some chain.
I used 16 chain for this sample.

2.
Insert your hook in the 2nd chain from the hook and pull a loop through.

3.
Continue until you have picked up one loop through each of the chain.
If you used 16 chain as I did, you should have 16 loops on your hook, one which was already on the hook and 15 which you picked up.

This completes the Forward Pass.

4.
Without turning, yoh and pull through the first loop on the hook. This makes 1 chain.

5.
Yoh again and pull through 2 loops on the hook.

6.
Continue to yoh and pull through two loops at a time until there is one loop left on your hook.

This is a Normal Closing and completes the Return pass and the foundation row.

There are a variety of stitches you can create in Tunisian crochet. Most of these are created with the way you insert your hook and wrap your yarn on the forward pass. The return pass is the same for all of the simpler stitches. It is only when you start creating the more complex stitch patterns that the way you close on the return pass will change.
