The files are scans of antique needlework books which are now in the public domain. Although the originals have no copyright, the scans are the works of the owners of the books and, as such, ARE copyrighted. The owners of the books give permission for you to download and use these file for personal use.
You are free to copy and distribute the scans, electronic or hard copies, FREE OF CHARGE, and to make derivative works under the following conditions:
• You must attribute the borrowed elements to the original title and author of the publication.
• For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of these works.
• Any of these conditions can be waived if you get written permission from the copyright holder (the current owner of the original book).
i.e. - You may give copies away, you may not sell them.
Fortunately, the offending auction was discovered and stopped.
Would you like to help stop this?
We have been discussing ways to stop this happening again but it does not matter what we do to protect these patterns, people will find a way around it. Adding something to the scan will only help prove that it was originally scanned for the library but will not stop people trying in the first place.
However, if everybody was to advertise the APL as much as possible, these copies would not sell as most people would know that they could get them for free. If every body could add a link to their site, blog or even your siggy, then the word would get around.
Either save the logo and use it to link to http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org
Or just insert a text link
